One of my fave bands lately is these guys, Portugal. The Man. What's interesting about this band is that most of them are from Alaska! I mean, how the hell do you get your band out there from Alaska? I have no idea, but the band began in Alaska as Anatomy of a Ghost who quickly gained popularity around 2002 but broke up. Half of that band teamed up with some new members to form Portugal. The Man, and they moved to Portland Oregon to do some recording and touring. As they finished a demo in the summer of 2004 they somehow landed a tour with Chiodos that fall and after some more member changes the band had a release with Fearless Records in 2006. They are now with Equal Vision and their latest release Censored Colors came out last September.
Portugal's sound is a good mix of indie rock, soul, blues and folk. I would recommend listening to a few songs before you make a decision on them because they switch it up a bit from song to song. You can stream a bunch from their arsenal on their myspace page. Check them out.
