Northside Festival

People at The L Magazine have teamed up with local music businesses to put together the first annual Northside Festival taking place in Greenpoint and Williamsburg Brooklyn from Thursday June 11th to Sunday June 14th. It will showcase bands and artists of the independent music and art scene in the NYC area.

Some of the bands playing include The Hold Steady, Bishop Allen, O'Death and Aa. The Williamsburg Gallery Association will be helping out featuring artists throughout the art spaces in the area. Tickets are $45 passes for all 4 days and they are not doing single day tickets apparently. It is cheap considering but it is only available for all of us 21 and older. I think you can get tickets for the individual shows through the venues though. My friends O'Death are playing at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and I'm pretty sure you can get tickets for that specific show online.

It's pretty much an uber hipster festival I'm assuming, but I can totally be wrong and on the flipside it's a music and art festival what can go wrong? Check out their website for complete line-ups and schedules. www.northsidefestival.com

Langerado Festival Canceled

What a way to kick off the festival season.... the 7th annual Langerado Music Festival scheduled for early March this year at Miami's Bicentennial Park has been canceled due to poor ticket sales. So what exactley happened here? For one Langerado's line-up although excellent didn't have any big headliners (last year they had REM, Beastie Boys and Ben Folds). Meanwhile other big festivals like Bonnaroo will feature Bruce Springsteen, Phish, NIN, MGMT, TV on the Radio and the Beastie Boys this summer. You can't forget about Coachella either who will have Amy Winehouse, Morrissey, Paul McCartney, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, The Cure and recent buzz bands like No Age, Lykke Li and Fleet Foxes. The festival market has become saturated as it is but the competition which also happens to be more established are bringing a lot of big acts.

The main reason I feel though maybe in their decision making. Previous Langerado Festivals were held in the Everglades where fans could camp out throughout the event and overnight. This year they decided to move the festival to the more urban Miami where camping is not permitted. As far as big festivals go camping is not only part of the attraction but a necessity. Who wants to spend the money or time in a hotel for 3 days when they're used to sleeping in tents and being a part of the "Festival." I have a feeling that the overhead for the event in Miami was a lot higher as well.

A lot of people are simply giving our dismal economy the blame, although that may be a factor I don't think it can stop music lovers and festival goers from having a great time. At least I hope so, but we will see as summer rolls around if other festivals may face the same fate as Langerado.

SXSW Music & Film Festival 09

Following Langerado another big festival early this year is non other than the South By Southwest Music and Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The best thing about this festival is that it's about the up and coming artists and filmmakers rather than the established. As the Fleet Foxes did last year, many bands break out from this festival and hit it big. You can be sure there will be many indie labels and PR firms holding showcases there featuring their best artists and tons of industry people looking for the next big thing.

Some of the bands performing this year include Ra Ra Riot, Beach House, Ben Harper's new band Relentless 7, White Lies and a whole lot more.

Whether you want to make industry connections, attend panels or check out all the buzz bands, with Austin as it's background you can bet it's going to get crazy down there. The only problem I have with this festival is that it's so expensive, but if you got the dough it may be fun and good for your musical career?

Langerado Music Festival 09

It's hard to believe here in New York where winter is really just kicking in, but Festival season is around the corner. Out of all the big music festivals that happen in the spring and summer time, Langerado might be one that you usually overlook.

This Florida based music festival is entering its 7th year, and this year they will be making Miami's Bicentennial Park their home for three days of all the live music you can handle. As their website states, Langerado began as a way to bring jam-based live music to South Florida. This year they are reaching completely outside the genre featuring acts from Snoop Dogg to Flogging Molly to Death Cab for Cutie. There are tons of great bands on the roster this year, so if you love live music, head down south and kick off the festival season right. Tickets are available now for one day or all three days.

After Dark Horror Fest III: 8 Films To Die For

Horror Fest is back in their third year of celebrating the horror genre, once again featuring eight films to stimulate your eyes and jump start your heart. If you're a fan of the genre like I am, you might want check out a film or two this week. All of the selections are rated R and if your average Hollywood horror flicks don't do it for you, you may find one here that will...... or not. There have been quite a few misses in my past Horror Fest experience and I'm sure there will a bunch this year as well. Hopefully you choose wisely.
