Featured Director: Vincent Moon of La Blogoteque

French blog site La Blogoteque started doing their version of video podcasts called The Take Away Shows around April of 2006 with founders Chryde and Vincent Moon. Here is a brief description from their website about The Take Away Shows:

"Every week, we invite an artist or a band to play in the streets, in a bar, a park, or even in a flat or in an elevator, and we film the whole session. Of course, what makes the beauty of it is all the little incidents, hesitations, and crazy stuff happening unexpectingly. Besides, we do not edit the videos so they look perfectly flawless, instead we keep the raw sound of the surroundings. Our goal is to try and capture instants, film the music just like it happens, without preparation, without tricks. Spontaneity is the keyword."

Although a bunch of other directors have joined the project since it's initial birth, it was Vincent Moon who took his desire to film music in an innovative way to new heights. If you've ever wondered what your favorite band would sound like walking down the street playing their song, here is your chance. Visit the site for more of Moon's projects along with the other directors.

Featured Director: Chris Cairns

LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk: Directed by Chris Cairns

Today's featured director is Chris Cairns, another talent signed to Partizan. A friend of mine was showing me the LCD Soundsystem video (shown above) a while back and I remembered it being really cool. I completely forgot the name of the song and the director's name so I've been trying to youtube this video for a while, but when I was perusing through Partizan's page today I found the video!

This London based director comes from a graphic design background and has a love for photography. Cairns' style is exactly that; photography and graphic design in motion. He has the ability to turn very simple concepts into creative visuals, and his images always take a cue from the music being used. You can view more of his direction at the Partizan site, make sure you go check it out (Commercials as well as Music Videos).

Featured Director: Laurie Thinot

Autokratz - "Stay The Same" Music Video: directed by Laurie Thinot

Directors obviously have a big role in films and movies but I think short projects like music videos and commercials are really where they get to showcase their talent. Although few minutes of footage often require a serious production, a lot of music videos like the one above is all done by the director, and in this particular case by Laurie Thinot.

I consider Thinot to be more of an artist than a director; for example if you snapshot any frame from the music video, it is great graphic design on its own. Since her art is in motion however, I guess naturally you would call her a director. All directors are artists you say? Well, yeah but what I mean is Martin Scorsese can't make a video like that on his own, while Thinot created the images, animated them, edited the video and directed it all by herself.

Unfortunately there wasn't much I could find out about this French director, but she is signed to Partizan (a record label for directors if you will) so you should be seeing a lot of her work out in the world. For now check out the videos I have posted, they're really damn cool.
